TIP #6 (OF 6)
Appearance:
WOOO! We made it to our 6th and final TIP! All about appearance!! This is all about HOW your present yourself! You are the best representation of YOURSELF!
We’re talking hair, make up, skincare, outfits, photos, and all the fun stuff.
Before you show up at your first auditions or dance team clinic, it helps to practice how you’re going to do your hair and make up. Find a look that you LOVE and stick to that look, especially for auditioning for a team for the first time.
Hair: Curly? Wavy? Natural? Loose curls? Tight curls? Straight? Braided? High Pony? That’s already a lot of options! Test out a couple looks & find out what makes you feel best and what looks best.
Deeper dive: figure out what the other girls’ LOOKS are for the team you are auditioning for. Does everyone have curly hair? That’s most likely the desired look for the team. Is there a VARIATION of different styles? Make sure you stand out from someone with a similar style as you.
Make Up: Practice makes perfect! You know your face the best. Practice different looks that make your face stand out. Dance or stage make up is more dramatic than every day make up. Eyelashes, contour, blush, lipsticks, eyebrows, eyeshadows, foundation, concealer, etc are required. Use colors that compliment your skin tone and hair color, and make your features POP.
If you have NO IDEA where to start, I recommend going to get your make up done and ask the make up artist to walk you through it. They also have glam classes where the instructor walks you through the process as you do your own make up. (I’ve been to one of these and I LOVED IT!!!) Youtube is also great if you need just a few tips.
Talking about it makes me want to go watch makeup tutorials now. LOL
SKINCARE: Find and stick to a skincare routine.
Part of being a dancer is dancing and sweating in a full face of make up. Learning how to manage your skin, breakouts, etc is a journey in itself. I speak from experience. The more you stick to a skincare routine, the better you’ll be set up for success in your every day life when you’re not wearing pounds of make up! LOL For example, I have to use oil-free, non-comedogenic products and wash my face, moisturize and put on sunscreen every morning and night. Substitute the sunscreen for eye cream at night. This is not required to make a dance team, but it WILL help your sanity and help you manage your face better :)
OUTFITS: Because you’re amazing and have done your dance team research, you’ll know what the style of the team is and prepare for how many outfits you might need!
Try on your outfits to make sure you love how they look on you. Dance around to make sure EVERYTHING is SECURED! If it’s not, safety pins baby!!!
Is your dream team more showy or more edgy? Rhinestones? Bright colors? Long sleeves? Mesh? Bra top or sports style top? Leggings? Shorts? Skorts?! LOL so many options! One way to stand out (in a good way) is to put something on your outfit that will set you a part and make it easy for the judges to notice you. For example) the girl with the neon yellow high tops OR the dancer with the jean shorts.
It’s totally up to you on how much you want to spend on your uniform!! It’s varied for me throughout the years! I’ve bought my outfits on Amazon, Forever21, small boutiques, etsy, Dallaswear. Other official dance audition wear include:
Do you need tights? If so, what kind? My favorite brands include Diva Legs and Peevey tights.
PHOTOS & RESUME:
Does your dream team require professional photos and a resume from you?
Story time: The first year I auditioned for the Wizards I submitted my college dance team headshot. I had my UKDT uniform on, poms, and I was BRUNETTE!!! I auditioned that day as a BLONDE. HAHA!! I had no idea what I was doing and no idea of what kind of photos they were expecting. Thank goodness I made it to the training camp where my coach asked me to submit another photo that week. You better believe I submitted the best photos I possibly could that upcoming week.
DON’T BE ME!!!! Hahaha A good way to find a photographer in your area to give you BOMB photos is to look up your dance team’s website and check out the STYLE of their photos. Clear, crisp? Cool! Find a photographer to do that for you! More artsy? That’s the style you’ll go for. Make sure you research photographers in your area and make your selection based on the style. You don’t need anything too fancy! A white/gray background or a brick background are perfect! I suggest a HEADSHOT & a FULL BODY.
Does your team require a DANCE RESUME?! A dance resume includes all of your dance performance and experience! It also includes what you do to make money and what school your go to/graduated from. Make it easy to read and put your most impressive experience at the top or most prominent. If you have experience on another proteam, make sure you list it!
WOW!!!! That’s a lot of tips! I hope this helped!!!!
